Used Windshield

I just purchased a used windshield and now I need help installing it. What should I do?

Hi Dennis! An old or damaged windshield needs to be replaced not only because using it is against the law but for the reason that it can obstruct your view when driving. Purchasing a used windshield is one good way of saving money, installing it yourself, will allow you to save even more. This process can be easy provided that you do have a helper that will not allow the new windshield to break.
To install your used windshield, first you need to remove the molding using a screwdriver. Make sure you are using a screwdriver with flat-head and be careful when removing the molding since you’ll be using it again.
Second, using a nail, create a hole into the sealer that holds the old windshield. Placed the guitar string into the hole, and then slowly go around the windshield using the guitar string. You can also buy and install a used windshield to help save money, if you can find one with out a bunch of cracks or chips it might be worth your time calling some junk yards in your area to see what is available.
Third, carefully take out the old windshield. Remove the old sealer by using putty knife. Soak the area with gasoline to completely remove the sealer.
Fourth and lastly, apply the sealer around your car’s frame. Then by using your helper, place the new windshield sealer at the center, starting with the bottom part. Don’t forget to press around its edges to completely seal and be able to replace the molding. See its not that hard to install a used windshield and save a ton of money yourself.
One thing you should consider if you are thinking about buying a used windshield, is the old sealer/weather stripping still attached to the shield? If so it can be a bear to remove without cracking or chipping the glass. Talk to an installer to see if they can safely remove the old seal and would be willing to work with you and install it. Some installers will not want to install a used windshield to begin with, so you might have to do this job on your own which can be a challenge if you have never done it before.
