Hey guys, I just bought a used windshield and I can not find an installer to put the windshield in my truck, what do I do now?

Tom

Houston, TX

Hey Tom, we answered this question previously with another reader question. You might be able to save a lot of money on the actual used windshield part versus a new one but the problem you might run into is who and how do you get it installed. You should keep calling local installers in your area, you are bound to find a mom and pop shop that will take on the challenge…the big guys will probably not mess with it.

You should also tell them you are not holding them responsible for chipping or cracking your used windshield as they try to remove the old weather stripping gasket….a chance of breaking the glass is high, although if you got the shield for cheap, I would take the chance. See if YOU can remove the sealer yourself, but take your time and don’t get to rough with it.

If you still can not find an installer, you might want to check out this youtube video below and see if you can tackle the job yourself. It’s not easy, but is doable if you take your time. Hardest part of course is making sure you get the used windshield sealed properly….obviously.

If all else fails, try getting a price quote on a new aftermarket windshield from this site, you would be surprised at how cheap the prices are on most cars and trucks these days thanks to China and their cheap labor force.

Reader’s Question:

I bought a used windshield and I don’t know how to put it in. Could you give me instructions on how to have it installed in my car?

Ricky

Kansas City, MO

For sure, installing a used windshield rather than a whole new one could save you money. Also, if you put it in by yourself, it can save you all the more money. The procedure on installation is less demanding if someone would assist you to avoid breaking or hurting yourself. You have to replace a cracked windshield since it could be against the law in your state, and could hinder your eyesight while driving.

The first thing you need to do to put in the replacement windshield is to detach the molding using a screwdriver. Remember to put it aside for later use. After that, use a nail to nudge an opening in the sealer which keeps the old windshield in place. Place a guitar string in the opening then gradually go round the windshield using the guitar string, tugging it to and fro to disconnect the sealer.

After the old windshield has been removed, you can use a putty knife to get rid of the rest of the sealer. Put some fuel on a cloth then apply it on the remaining sealer and allow it to soak. Completely take off the sealer using a putty knife.

Put in the new sealer all along the frame. Along with your assistant, the replacement used windshield must be centered in the frame. The base of the windshield must be put in first and then place down the windshield till it is in the frame area. Push around every border in order to seal and change the molding.
